(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm new-ish to chickens. I actually had my first chicken when I was a kid. A lone rooster we bought from a man selling roosters on the side of the road. We had him for many years and I think he eventually started thinking he was a cat. He was a lap rooster and hung out with our cats.
I've also helped to tend to a flock for one of my neighbors for the last few years. I've been wanting my own flock for a few years and have spent a long time studying up. I finally took the plunge in June.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I currently have 10 chickens. 9 pullets and one cockerel. 5 of the pullets and the cockerel are 15/16 weeks old. The other 4 pullets are 9/10 weeks old.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Golden Comets, 2 ISA browns, 2 Golden Laced Wyandottes, 1 Blue Ameraucauna and 1 Starlight Green Egger. I'm hoping to add just a few more of different breeds soon. To complete my "dream flock".
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I LOVE birds and chickens have quickly become my favorite. I love observing them, they're endlessly entertaining with their individual little quirks and personalities. I enjoy spending time with them each day. They've especially helped with instilling a routine and purpose and sense of normalcy, especially in these times. They're like my therapy.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I enjoy painting, art journaling, crafting. I also love gardening. I like building and creating things.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have 3 human kids, all girls from toddler age to tween and right in between. I have a dog and 3 cats. I'm currently doing the stay at home mom thing.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I think I found this awesome site from my googling during my chicken research. I came back to it constantly and finally decided to join. I've been a member for a little while, so I'm a little late on my intro post.
