(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Sorta-we had a few off and on when I was growing up. It was a farming community & we were known to take in stray critters, so we wound up with people's "spare" roosters, troublesome hens, bullied babies, etc. The most we ever had at once though was like 4 and we never really did much with them they slept in the doghouse with one of our dogs (which, honestly, was probably the safest place for them with how many predators there were around us that kept breaking into our super tough rabbit enclosures). So I've been around them plenty, but honestly, never like this.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
14-they are all 1 week old. Hoping we are past the worst of it (we've lost 3 of them), terrified I'm going to inadvertently kill them all.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Salmon Faverolles
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love their different personalities. One of the roosters we had growing up would walk us to and from the car and crow any time the dogs started barking-pretty sure he thought he was a dog! The chicks are great to watch & can't wait to see them develop their own personalities.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Crocheting, knitting, gardening, video games, making jam
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a nursing student, a mother of 4 year old twins and a 7 year old, we have 2 cats and a giant lap dog (90 lbs or so at her last vet appointment & she's still got some filling out to do)...we live on a farm in the middle of nowhere...most of it we've leased out, but we have 3 acres or so to play with. I'm not much into DIY, but I like to figure things out & typically am able to fix things when they are broken (plumbing, electrical, etc). My anxiety tends to make me overthink everything...but sometimes it helps me solve problems.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
The backyard chickens subreddit, just found it this week, I joined because of an injury to one of my chicks and an overall paranoia that I'm going to somehow kill them all
