New(ish) to Raising Chickens!

Welcome to BYC, Cris! Love the pics, and awesome intro!

I'm actually thinking of moving a coop into my fenced in garden so I have a place to isolate a sick hen at the moment. The garden is about 250' from the chicken run. There are times when you want to have that distance. Either way. You sound handy. I'm sure when you need space you'll be able to add a coop where you need it. We have ended up with 4 coops because of chicken math. One is a prefab and will go in the fire pit this spring. We will be breaking ground on a new 8x10 coop later this month. So, that is why I"m always encouraging everyone to go big when it comes to coops. :D Just trying to save you the inconvenience of building yet another coop.

Ahhh! I misunderstood. I thought you meant add the existing barn side coops to the current coop and run.

I added a couple video above so you all can see what I'm working with, lol. All in all I'm fairly lucky to be starting out with mostly (you'll see in the videos lol) complete...if somewhat inadequate structures. Also...everything I needed to start my brooders except the totes...was already here. Feeders, waterers...I didn't have to buy any of it. Just clean it all with bleach water, rinse thoroughly, and reuse lol.

I'm sure I'll end up splitting this flock eventually...if only to save infighting etc. I've got two HUGE buildable areas for runs off the barn...that are currently small corrals of a sort. They sort of make this coop obsolete in a way...so it may be best to hold off on modifying it externally much as it's still useful for a shed, or even an outside kennel if I have to cage Ranger and/or the cats up for some reason (bug bombing the house, etc). I'm also eventually keeping a handful of rabbits in the barn...so it being so far won't be an issue. Again...when you guys see the video you'll surely have much more realistic ideas for options than I currently have!

Loved your introduction Chris, I don't envy all the work you have cut out for you but, I'm sure Ranger will offer to help out. Love the heelers red or blue. A good friend had both and they were spectacular with her chickens, ducks, geese, swans, and keeping predators OUT!!

Hope you will re-visit with photos once you have things just the way you want them. I know we would love to see that. :yesss:

Hi Cris and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us :ya

Loved your intro and your knives :love As for your CX, if you're feeding them standard chick starter, keep a close eye on them and you may need to harvest as early as six weeks. On an 18% broiler they'll often get out to 8-10 weeks.

Thanks!

Ranger's a definite help lol. He currently keeps himself useful by keeping the cats out of the brooder room while I'm working with them (*hint...I keep the door open to give him something to do lol). I'm sure that when it's time to build the coops up, he'll do his level best to help there, too lol.

And yes! Absolutely more photos and video! I like to document what I've done...both for critique and to help others. Plus if I want to do something similar down the road I have a rough blueprint for do's and don'ts!
