New Jersey

I'm so bummed my two Easter eggers are laying brown eggs. I so hoped for some colored eggs "sigh". I don't know if I'll have room for more.
If you're coming to the show, see if you can sell them and get what you really want. I'm picking up a couple of colored egg-layers myself! You can rent a sale cage for $3 when you get there.

Speaking of the show...

I have updates posted for the Sussex County Poultry Fanciers Annual Fall Show 2012.

Last night we registered 894 birds, with more entries arriving this week. We hope to break 1000!

We are also expecting to reach over fifty entries for the Jersey Giant classes. This is NJ's home-grown heritage breed, and the largest breed of chicken. Some of the males reach fifteen pounds and stand over two feet tall! You'll never see a collection like this anywhere else!

Updates include a Newcomer/First-timer info session to be held at 10am. Although we will primarily discuss the show and how to make the most of your visit, there will be a question and answer session for general topics. This is a great opportunity to get many or your questions answered. Keep a running list between now and then, and bring it with you to the show. You'll never remember everything you wanted to ask once you're standing there.

I realize that, for many of you, this is a two-hour or more trip, but remember this is the only adult poultry show in NJ. The local county fairs and 4H shows have no comparison. You won't see birds like this anywhere but at real poultry shows - don't miss the opportunity! And bring your camera!

Please contact me for more information.

See you at the show!

Well, we knew to expect more than the usual number of Jersey Giants at our show because of the Jersey Giant National, but as of today there are

OVER SEVENTY JERSEY GIANTS ENTERED!!

If you've ever considered this wonderful breed, this is your chance to meet and greet some of the top breeders in the country. Don't miss it!

Where are all my NJ peeps? How is everyone doing with their flocks? Good here. I have six laying and eight more to go. All brown eggs, as my two EE are laying cream colored not blue/green eggs. I'm planning on a second coop over the winter and ordering some chicks maybe to grown inside over the winter and be ready for spring. I'll see this weekend about what to do.

not sure...it's more than 3 hours one way and we can only be there one day...most likely Sunday....by then most everything will be sold I guess so it is not cost effective to go to just stroll around :/

Dragonfyr - and anyone else planning to come on Sunday from a distance - my advice is to stay home. The two-day show is a bit of a misnomer, as the only thing going on Sunday will be watching the exhibitors getting antsy waiting for the close of the show after the awards are handed out, somewhere around 11am, although that morning is a great time to pick their brains for chickens advice. There will be some leftover sale birds, but I'm not planning on having the bake sale table, and I don't know if the food truck will be there, or if we will have our own bagel and coffee table. Sometimes the vendors only come on Saturday, as well. The chinese auction is only on Saturday, as well as the showmanship for the juniors. When I tell non-exhibitors about the show, I only mention Saturday, as the two-day meaning is really for exhibitors.

For those in South Jersey, the Delmarva Show in March is just as close, if not closer, to you. I'm in Monmouth County, and it's only three hours for me. Not a great sales area, though, as many of the birds are arranged to be sold beforehand, and it's too early for chicks, really. But, it still has all the benefits of a regular show, meaning there is a great bank of chicken knowledge walking around. And, they have a casino next door with a great buffet!
