New Jersey

We got some of our 1st chicks from Jersey Chickens. Overall good chicks-but their Americaunas were not the breed, they are actually Easter Eggers. Love our Easter eggers, but not what we thought we were buying.

Regarding how I raise the chickens--I have a hard time confining critters...so I keep them based on how I already believe philosophically. We raised cornish cross meat chickens this summer for the first time and did well free ranging them during the day and confining them to their hoop house at night. I do believe that if I were not able to be home most of the time and supervise it would not work out as well as it has. I also think the dogs are very important. I dont think I would have as good of a garden with out the dogs either though!

I'm planning for a secure coop and a small attached run, and definitely we would count on shutting them in overnight.  I do think we would attract some "wildlife" that we hadn't seen much of before, but I might at least give it a try, with the dog and a rooster to help out.  I get the impression this kind of question is subject to such a huge number of variables that you have to come to your own conclusions, but it helps a lot to hear other peoples' experiences.  Thanks again.

I found a website for a place called Jersey Chickens.  It's in Jackson, which is reasonably near me, and it sounds like they breed their chicks locally, so I'm kind of thinking that might be a good place to go for my little starter flock this spring.  Has anybody here dealt with them before?

Love jersey chickens. I get new ones from them every year. Some of my best hens are from them. They are very passionate about their animals and it shows. They hatch their own and always have a nice selection.

Ok talked to npip person I can't give anyone eggs to hatch for me . This sucks
That stinks. Can you borrow an incubator?

I am only hatching for those who specifically request legbars, olive and easter leggers, and porcelain dutch. I am hatching some spitzhaubens for my breeding project that I am getting started on now that I am working with the national club. I am going to go for the NPIP once I have my breeding flocks firmly established.

I Will have to find out if I can borrow an incubator. Yeah the rules for npip are strict . If I can find a npip /AI tested broody silkie I can hatch eggs that way.. I don't trust my incubator to work properly.as long as I hatch my own eggs myself here its not that bad. It's just off premises that is not good. I did however find cuckoo maran hens npip/AI tested so those I ordered for the delivery at the poultry show in may from a member who is certified.
