My husband and I are new to backyard chicken keeping and at first I wanted our girls to be all one breed (15) RIR ... now I'm thinking about making a "blended family" with RIR, New Hampshire, and Buff Orpingtons. Does anyone have experince cooping these girls together? I'm afraid of aggressvie birds, hen pecking, fighting. Is is best to stick to my original plan of all RIR's? Thanks!

Pecking can happen wether you have same breeds or blended especially if there is tight quarters. There is always aggressive ones in a flock, plenty of room is the key. I have 22 different breeds of chickens and they give me colorful eggs. The breeds your thinking of cooping together are all friendly and docile. the RIRs have more tendency to be more assertive during hormone change, point of lay.

Thank you!! I thought I’d made up my mind about all RIR’s but now I just can’t decide!! Maybe I’ll end up with twice as many girls as I originally planned for now :wee
