Hi and
! I really enjoy BYC. It's very informative and helpful and fun! I hope you enjoy it too!
My family and I moved to a SE Missouri farm from Nevada four years ago this month. I was very much a city girl who loved animals! So we moved here, and all of a sudden had 95 bulls, cows, heifers, and calves to take care of (and having a new calf born every few days)! We have some pretty funny stories of trying to become farmers, LOL.
Following summer we got our very first milk cow, a Holstein we named Buttercup. My Dad was attending livestock auctions with a friend of ours who loves to go to all the livestock auctions in the area. All of a sudden a Holstein goes through with three calves on her, and Dad ends up buying the her real cheap. Turns out, she had never been milked, and was only used for orphan calves. She'd try to run you over, and kick you during milking, etc. We almost sold her! My Dad was so happy when after a month he was finally able to sit down during milking (until then he had to stand up and use a large coffee mug which he'd dump into a bucket as soon as it filled)! Now, three years later, she's an absolute sweet heart, and we ain't never gonna sell her! She lets us kids ride her, she wears hats, and puts up with most of our other shenanigans!
