New Landlord Next Door

The sad thing is that rental properties pull down the value of surrounding properties more than anything. Renters are notorious for being loud and oblivious to any upkeep of the landscaping needs. Some privacy fencing may be nice to keep the "nutjob" over in his yard and to block your view of the rental property.

I just hope that he gives up on it. He bought the house cheap but he will have to spend tens of thousands to get it up to code. And I will make sure that he doesn't rent it without doing so. No slum lords in my neighborhood, thank you very much.

Is it bad that I'm glad the inspector that came to look at your chickens is sicking the building inspectors on your jerk landlord neighbor?

Nope, not bad at all! I firmly believe that what goes around comes around and now he gets his. He sure has wasted a whole lot of people's time and all over nothing.

ShellLea, I would definitely look into getting the fence put up asap! I would suspect this guy is always going to be a thorn even though he personally isn't going to be living there. I'd want it to be crystal clear exactly where his property line ends and yours begins.

I live right in front of a guy just like him. He has over a hundred cows in not so great condition and about 6 donkeys that go on and on and on at 3 am every day! We don't have the babies outside yet but they get play time daily and he has already made comments about if we have a rooster and he hears him he is calling the cops. His friends who live 2 houses down have a rooster who is forever crowing and that is fine but the second mine crows he is calling the cops. There isn't anything they can do cause they have food and water and I'm pretty sure a 10x16 lofted barn with a 10x20 covered run is considered adequate shelter for 4 silkies. I told my husband I hope he does call cause he would be going to jail for a long long time when the cops find what he sells out of his house and grows out in the woods.

The arrogance of your new neighbour is unbelievable. He's basically saying, "Now that I'm here you'll have make some changes to what you do on your property because of what I plan to do with mine."

I'm glad the building inspector got called too, lol! I'm pretty sure he was planning to slap some paint on the walls and try to rent it out. I knew the previous owner quite well and he literally only used two rooms plus the downstairs bathroom. The rest of the house is in horrible condition. He was renovating until the divorce broke him. There is a lot of work to be done over there to get it up to code.

Mr. Felts was outside this morning when I went out to feed the chickens. He had a much better attitude, to my surprise. He even said good morning to me! He just wanted to ask about the property line. We have a tree and brush line between the back yards. Our property goes about 8 feet past that. I told him he could have the same arrangement as the previous owner. Keep up on the lawn and you can use it. I also told him that if its not kept up or if the tenants cause problems I will have a privacy fence put up. My landlord, my uncle, has already said that he will pay for the permit to put up an 8 foot fence if I don't think a 6 foot fence will be sufficient.

I really don't want to have problems with him, and I am willing to be neighborly. I will not tolerate asinine behavior from him or any future renters, though. So far, so good. Mr. Felts said that he had no problems with keeping up on the lawn, said thank you, and shook my hand. I can't help but be a little suspicious, though. Maybe I'm getting cynical but I doubt it. At least I have the law on my side and BYC members to vent to.

PS Glenn, the city guy called and asked, "What kind of chickens were those black and white ones again?" He has decided to get a few Dominiques, lol!

oh this makes me wish you lived next to our renter.. she has a parrot, a dog and a cat. very nice elderly woman who puts in a large garden

. she would feed your girls garden scraps, and give you produce and possibly ask if you could keep a chicken for her. shes utterly hilarious.

She sounds wonderful! I do have great neighbors on the other side, thankfully! Too bad they don't garden, lol.
