New Landlord Next Door

I'm having a big big problem and wondering if there is something I can do. I live in townhouse with a fenced in backyard which is fairly big I have a garden, a flower bed, a rose bush bed, and a chicken coop. Well pretty much everyone around here has seen my chickens and thinks they are the coolest thing and loves to come look at them and the guy who cuts grass has seen them well he went back to the guy who runs the place and told him we have chickens I got a call today from the lady in the office saying I now have to get rid of them which is crazy because everyone around here has animals. Is there anything I can do. I keep them clean and my yard is fenced in with a tall fence so you can't even see them unless someone looks in the gate. If it helps I live in the county and it is legal to own them.

Do you own or rent your townhouse? If you own, is there an association with rules?

So sorry you are having problems. If you are renting or have an association you may have to get rid of them. Most times chickens are considered livestock and not pets. I would try like crazy to get it approved, though. More and more people are coming around when it comes to chickens. Try asking your neighbors who enjoy your birds to speak on your behalf. Let us know how it goes!

Funny thing, he hasn't been back over there since the drama filled day. But we are still putting up a fence.

I am so glad you decided to put up the fence. Given the way he initially behaved, I am concerned he might do something
to or with the chickens.

I'm also getting cynical in my "seasoned years". (Not quite old age)
I have read some really weird/wacky neighbor stories. We have been fortunate to have quality people as neighbors for
the most part over the years. My current neighbors didn't even know we had chickens until our grandson told them.
They think it's so funny how "the city girl has gone country". I only have three chickens and a few veggie plants in our raised
bed garden. Everyone's got an opinion. Am so glad that the good guy caught a break this time (meaning you)

We had 2 years worth of a really bad neighbor. Now that they have moved, all the feral cats have been disposed of and now everyone gets along and helps each other out. The best thing is we have influence both of our neighbors into getting chickens. It wasn't anything we said because we never mentioned anything like they should get some. We only gave away free eggs and they liked hearing them. Last year we gave one neighbor 4 hens and this year he has 15 more on the way. The other neighbor has now decided he wants some too so I am giving him a coup that I started building. We will finish it together and get it all going for him. Nothing like great neighbors!

Good to hear you're putting up a fence. Not sure what the laws are in your area, but in my area we still have "adverse possession" laws which techically give a person a right to claim property if they can prove they've maintained it for a period of time (it usually takes years of maintaining but time these days, at least for me, goes by quickly). I know 8ft. of property doesn't sound like a lot, but wouldn't want to see you lose it if those laws are in place.

The crazy thing about it is I don't have any neighbors. We got new management and they have raised the rent sky high so no one is renting from them (thankfully mine didn't get raised). But I'm on the end of the building and there is someone on the other end. The new management has never liked us it first started when he took over and wanted to take down our fence that we put up when we moved in and we told him no because we have kids and needed the fence. Next he got mad cause we had a pitbull who is not aggressive my little girl who was 2 at the time played all over her along with a 5 and 6 year old never has she even showed her teeth. We got rid of the dog and they changed our lease to no pets well I was fine with that I had gotten rid of the dog well they had changed the lease back to having pets so I have signed a new lease so I figured it was fine to have them until I read that my lease which says no pets and no one else around here that I know has a lease saying no pets like I said in the previous post everyone around here has pets. So now I'm thinking I have a special lease that they made for me. I'm so mad now I have moved my chickens to my dads which sucks because I have to get up and go over there everyday to feed and water and now me and the kids can't go in the backyard and watch them when we want. I am so ready to move out of here.
