Hi there!
I just bought chickens last year, the first time since my Granpa's farm in Xenia, OH.
My Granparents raised me during the week and my folks had me weekends(my Mum was sick alot- I was late life child) until I was 7yrs old.(we move to Az)
Gramp had a 200 acre farm. Very beautiful it was.
I bought 2 Speckled Sussex chicks last March (see pick from last Aug) and hand raised them.(Minerva & Louise) A neighbor gave me 5 more, 2 Australorp hens (Henrietta & Vivian) & 3 buff Orps(hens are Elsie & Chicken Little, George is the rooster).
Ya I named them. They follow me around everywhere, even out to the barn! They love to scratch ariund in the manure pile & such.
I feed organic/non gmo feed to them and my horses(especially non-gmo alfalfa) and they get scraps from the garden & weekends the organic grocery gives me their greens. I live 40 miles SE of Denver/35 miles NE of Co. Springs.
We live on 10 acres of my Daed's property. I also raise Lippitt Morgan Horses and have a 13yr old Chespeake Bay Retriever that guards the flock.
I want to get a few Buckeye chickens and maybe raise them instead.
I really like my Sussex hens, they are my buds! The Australorp hens have already gotten frostbitten combs, as has my rooster, George. They come into the barn or garage at night and sleep in dog vari-kennels with a heat light on. When we had single digits, I put an oil-filled space heater out in the garage so they didn't get so cold.
My Sussex hens started laying Aug 1st through mid Oct, then they started molting.
My Australorps & Orps started laying mid Nov and are still laying. I get 2-3 eggs a day.
I have no children, just the Hubby & the 7 chickens, 6 horses & 1 dog.
I'm finished!
