I just wanted to say how pleased I am with my little Barred Rock girl. She laid her first egg on Monday, and since then she has given us three eggs. Her first egg was predictably somewhat small, but not nearly as small as I expected. She didn't lay on Tuesday, but gave us a nice, large egg on Wednesday. I didn't expect anything today, but to my surprise she gave us a nice medium sized egg. Everything I have read suggested I shouldn't see a second egg in several days, but she has given me 3 eggs in 4 days! The shells have all been super thick and the yolks a deep orange.

She's also become super sweet since she started laying. She follows me everywhere (even trying to follow me into the house), talking to me, and has even started letting me pet her without running off. I think part of her letting me pet her now is she has become used to me touching her now that I scratch her back when she does a submissive squat.

All in all this is so very rewarding :)

Now, if my Cream Legbars will just start laying. One of them will take awhile, but the other I expect something from any day now...

Thanks for giving me a place to babble about my gals !

Congratulations on your eggs

My first BR to lay, laid almost daily as yours has. But all 3 of my BR's early eggs were tiny ones.

I'm no expert but have read that the older the pullet is when she starts to lay, then the first eggs are larger then the early eggs from those who start laying at a younger age. I don't recall the specifics, but the commercial egg industry can somehow manipulate maturation to delay egg production so the early eggs are large enough to sell.

Likely the Legbars will start to lay as well :)

She is over 5 months old and just started laying this week... These are my first chickens so I'm no expert, but I think that she was slightly late and that probably accounts for her larger sized eggs.

I love that pic as well! I snapped it just last week. Unfortunately my poor potato plants are no more... I give them an enormous tub for dusting and they of course choose the plant pot

I think the later they start laying, the longer they will lay. One of my Buff Orpingtons was so much later than my other BO and BR I was getting concerned, and some folks in the threads reported theirs didn't start for 6-9 months. When she started laying they were large to extra large and shocked me.

You should enter the photo in the Calendar Contest! It may be a winner.

5 months isn't really 'late' for a barred rock...most breed start at 18-24 weeks.
and it wouldn't really account of the egg being larger.

Have you eaten those larger eggs yet? Bet they are double yolkers.

They never dust where you want them too...unless you confine them in a run like I do...hehehe...
.....but even then they dig holes where you don't really want tholes that deep.
