I really am just guessing here, but I think it's possible my new Cream Legbar, just seven months old, has died because she laid two eggs at once.
Taffy died this week. It was pretty sudden. Two days before, she seemed normal, then I found her moping alone in a far corner of the run with her tail down. Normally she's a bossy, vocal little unit, but she had gone mute.
She and her sister Snickers had gotten off to a great start laying a few weeks back. One day, I discovered four blue eggs in the nests. I had just three blue egg layers, so someone had laid two blue eggs in a single day. I knew it was one of the Legbars.
It probably was Taffy who had laid them, and now her body had sent two eggs down the chute, and they got hung up inside her. I can't know for sure, since I disposed of her body without trying to cut into her. I did that once before with another blue egg layer who had also died after having had a previous incident of laying two eggs in a single day. Rachel was an EE and I chopped up her body trying to learn why she had died, and it came to naught.
I'm just posting this to see if anyone else has had a layer die after having previously laid twice in a single day. I'm wondering how often this happens.
She came from My Pet Chicken, by the way.
