I have a Copper Marans pullet (5.5 months old) who laid her first egg either Tues. or Weds. No eggs since then. Today she appears to be straining to lay another -- she keeps returning to her special spot in the coop (not my nest box), but the egg isn't forthcoming. Do I need to do something to help her? When I approach she tends to stop trying, and then she clucks about the free range area. After I back off she returns to her spot. She did eat earlier and then also she clucked about a lot complaining. The chickens free range during the day, so returning to the coop during daylight is a very rare thing -- only for laying eggs or torrential rain.
