Our 20 week old Speckled Sussex laid a perfect first egg two days ago. Last night she was fluffed up, eyes closed, head drawn back and straining. She dropped a shell less egg, yolk intact. Then a few minutes later another one, only there were also pieces of soft shell with it. After that she laid a pretty big, smelly but normal looking poop. We kept her in for the night, on a heating pad and she drank lots of sav-a-chick, layer pellets, plain yogurt and free oyster shell. Today she seems better. Dropped a couple more really smelly huge poops, but other than that, she's normal again. A hawk did get one of our ladies the other day which seemed to stress them out and they've been locked in their run (they're used to free ranging all day) until we figure out what to do about the hawk. Could her being a new layer on top of the stress caused this, and will it pass, or should I be concerned about the pieces of soft shell that came out with her intact yolks? We treated our flock of 5 a few months back for coccidiosis with Corrid, everybody did well. I have not wormed them yet, but I do have Safeguard and was planning on doing it this week, but I didn't want to stress out their system. Should I give some kind of antibiotics or treatment for the shell less laying and hold off on the worming? Or is it just a fluke thing because of her being a new layer and possibly the stress of the hawk attack, and should I go forward with the planned worming? I'm headed to TSC today anyway for layer feed. Thanks for reading!
Oh! One more thing... I have Serama and Silkie bantam eggs incubating right now due to lockdown on Sunday. Since my existing flock was recently treated for Cocci, should I start the new chicks on medicated feed, or how does that work?
Here's a picture of my lady's first egg. It's a little rough, but well formed. The next two were the shell-less one and the soft-shelled broken one.
