New layer trouble...two soft shell eggs and now...? Please help!

Do you have the Baytril label? There are different strengths, such as 100 mg per ml, and 22mg per ml. I am more familiar with the oral version 10%. So that will make a different in the amount given. However 3 ml would be a huge amount to give in a single injection.

Whenever my animals are given any medication at the vet, the exact amount administered is printed on the receipt. Check your receipt to see if your vet does the same.

FWIW: From Baytril website:
Ornamental birds im 20 mg/kg bw, once daily for five to ten consecutive days. In case of complicated infections, higher doses may be necessary.

If the vet was using the 2.5% solution, that would have been a 75 mg dose. It a 6 pound chicken, that is 27.5 mg/Kg or 33 mg/Kg in a 5 pound chicken.

I don't have a receipt - it was a farm call. They'll email me the invoice. She hand-wrote stickers that she attached to one each of the Baytril and steroid syringes that she pulled from bottles on her truck. Hopefully she wrote the % solution on them. She may also call today, in which case I'll ask.

Guys! She ate her eggs from this morning, and maybe a bit of feed! And then she ate more eggs just now. And there were a few poops in her crate, ranging from ugly to okay.

And the vet did NOT make a mistake - the syringes are all .3! Whew.

I am cautiously optimistic, and SO thankful for you experts.

And the other 9 layers laid 8 eggs, a new record:

That is wonderful news!
Congratulations on the eggs too. Good luck with your lovely little girl.

Beautiful eggs! Well, good to know the Baytril dosage is good.

Thanks! If I discover that I can easily get the .2 of steroids in, would it be better to go ahead and do the same with the Baytril? Same oral dose as injected IM? She showed me how to kind of massage below the eye, towards the beak to open it. I managed to do it, though I didn't add a syringe to the process. If I am working at the right side of the beak with a small amount (2 or 3 drops) are my chances of not getting liquid in her trachea pretty good? This is hypothetical. She was so rotten for the steroid for the vet, that it might not end up being worth it, as critical as the Baytril is.

No more questions, I promise.

I would probably just squirt a drop at a time into the beak, and let her swallow it.

I did it! The way the vet showed me worked when she was super sick, but she was not having it tonight. But I remember reading about pulling down on their wattle (she doesn't have any) so I used her beard, haha! It worked and I got her steroid and Baytril in. She looks even better, fingers crossed! Son feeding her egg with ground up eggshell after medication tonight:

Good morning! Last question and then I will stop bothering you all. She looks normal this morning. I gave her two drops of steroid (she'll get that and Baytril this evening). She was trying to get to the scrambled eggs before we did medicine. She seems to want to be out of her hospital crate and back with her three friends in the barn aisle and stalls. Should I let her have some supervised time out? I'm doing chores so could keep an eye on things. It's just kinda sad watching her walk around and peck in a tiny circle in her dog crate. Chicken in question (excuse the state of my barn aisle):
