Congrats to all of you first eggers!

We've just begun reaping the egg benefits too. Our RIR was the first to lay, early, at 17 weeks. Now just 2 wks later, our Golden Sexy layed her first today. I was expecting to have the practice round like our RIR had, but this egg is beautiful -hard shell, nice and dark brown, and same size as her sis. I gather from other postings that the first egg is not always a practice. Is that right? Do they sometimes get it right right off the bat?

Julie, first congrats on your first eggs. It is why we all do this chicken thing.

Different breeds will have different results, and also their can be a big difference in eggs within the same breed. Backyard hens lay quite a variety of egg shapes, hardness, color of yokes and shades of brown. Easter eggers of course have the green, blue, and shades of brown also. Way more fun than store bought caged hens eggs, that lack the nutrition of your home raised eggs.

My entire original flock started out laying medium to large eggs, no pullet eggs. The new layers all started out with pullet eggs and are still laying small ones, except for my RIR/Buff Orp cross, who is laying double yolkers alot.
