I have a 17 week old Australorp who laid her first egg 2 days ago. Today she is pacing, going from nest box to nest box, scratching, panting. She’s been doing this for hours. I went in her vent about an inch with my finger and I felt no egg, so I’m thinking not egg bound?? She’s uncomfortable. Any advice please give.

Very warm .. high 90s, no other hens doing this, no mass, eating and drinking. May have had yellow poop this morning, it was in the coop and may have been hers

New layers can sometimes be a little temperamental. Each one is different. I had an ancona hen who would go around loudly screaming at all of the other hens running them out of the nest boxes. Hopefully, she is just hormonal right now, and will settle down. Poop pictures are helpful.

Thank you. She seemed better today and had a normal poop. Next time I'm going to take a picture.

I came here because I have a 19 week old black Copper Marans hen doing the exact same thing. I’m not sure if she’s laying yet or not. Did you ever figure out what this was? Did it sort itself out?
