Guess I skipped the introduction and went right for the questions! My name is Kristi and I am from Maine. I grew up on a dairy farm and now live with my boyfriend on a small farm. We currently have 3 Holsteins & a Jersey bull calf that will all most likely be filling the freezers this fall. My boyfriends father has a few laying hens of his own. I have 26 broilers coming on May 6th. This is my first chicken experience. I wanted to raise my own dinner basically as a hobby for the summer but also to have the experience of raising my own food whether it be a garden of vegetables or meat on my table. Growing up on the farm has taught me the process of how our meat makes it to the table, I am no stranger to that part of life. I know I will not have any problem with the butchering process although I will be hiring out for that!

Love to hear others opinions and I hope to learn a lot being here. I did read "Raising Chickens for Dummies" and feel like I know a lot already. My BF thought I was crazy and laughed at me for reading a "Dummy" book, but after proving him wrong on many things he thought he knew about chickens I can say I'm pretty proud of myself!

I am new to BYC as well! Although I do not necessarly raise my chickens for meat. We eat their eggs. We have had to limit our rooster population after we bought some straight run chicks from the feed store last year. We made chicken and dumplins which was very tastey, better than store bought chicken. Good luck with all your chicken endevors!
