New Male Button Quail Problem....

Well good luck with yours. You say you have a couple females how many is that? I would not let the male see all of them at once. Just use one at a time and see if that helps. Keep them in a quiet place away from the other females.

Mine are doing fine, even slept next to each other for a few hours. I have seen her eat and drink so that is good and they are talking a bit and now are next to each other just hanging out.
I feel sorry for this female as she came for someone who had her in a aviary with lots of other buttons and she has been mated so much that she is almost bare naked, plucked, from the males. I do not agree with keeping them like that so am glad I have a better home for her. Poor thing is so ragged that I can not even tell if she is just a regular color or not. She did show me another female that had white feathers on her belly area but she was really naked so I chose this one. With the proper diet now and all she should feather out soon. I am not to concerned with eggs but hope she starts to lay in a month or less. we shall see.

I have three females and two males all from the same hatch. Since they are siblings from my own breeding pair, I really don't want to pair them up with one another. I have another batch from eggs that were shipped that I had planned to pair with them, but now that I have this older bird, I thought I might try one of the females with him. I've had these females together within view of him, so maybe I'll try your suggestion of only having one within view and move the others into a different room.

It's nice to know that your new hen is in a good place now. If you get a chance, I would love to see a photo of them together. Thanks again for the all the help and suggestions.

Sad news today the new female died. She was eating and drinking yesterday but this morning she wouldn't even move when I put my hand in the cage. I know they did not fight as I sleep in this same room they are in and no fighting has happened. I think the move from a group of quail to being in with just one was too much of a shock to her. I also found out that she was kept with just bird seed scattered on the floor of her old aviary and a dish of water. This is not the right way to keep these pretty little birds and it makes me so ****** but what are we as responsible pet owners to do... I did not get to see the way she was kept as I am handicapped and could not go down the stairs to see the aviaries. Next time, if there is a next time, if I cannot then my husband will have to go for me.
okay I got that off my chest.

Good luck with yours.

I'm sad to hear you had such trouble w/ your female quail.

Next time your husband goes to that aviary get him to take some pictures. Borrow your kids cell phones if you have to. Cellphones nowadays take remarkably good quality pictures. Saying how it looks is one thing, seeing with your own eyes is another.

Oh wow, I am so sorry to hear this.

It really is sad how some breeders keep their birds. I've been shocked a few times now when visiting different homes to look at birds, purchase a finch, etc. Not too long ago, I was interested in purchasing some button quail eggs from someone here locally. Once I saw how they kept their adult birds, I couldn't do it, so I ended up buying online to have some shipped to me. It makes me angry, too, when I see people not taking responsible and decent care of these birds.

Wish this had not happened to you, and that the outcome would have been much different.

Thanks.
Today I am on the road to get a female that someone is giving away as her mate died. What is it with all these cuties dying? Anyway it is a long trip as they are 50 miles one way but if she needs a home I have one. The owner told me she has some curled toes but gets along just fine. We shall see. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I've been hearing the same thing with chickens on BYC. A lot of die-offs this year, whether chicks or adults. I'm wondering if it's just fluke, feed changes and/or severe weather changes.

I've had birds get paralysis due to contaminated feed with mold spores in them.

Havent lost any birds but I've come close a few times. Took 3 bags of feed back to the store.

Out of curiosity: Were you able to see the mold or did they have a recall? Which colour of mould?
