I'm trying to find out if something is wrong with our mama bird. She hatched chicks 3 weeks ago today and has been an excellent mama. She used to sleep in the elevated coop, but has been ground level under the coop in a wire crate the last 5 weeks or so. She is an Orpington and is on a 20% protein food with supplemental oyster shell available. She hasn't been laying and all has seemed quite normal until my daughter noticed that above her tail she has a patch where she is missing feathers and the skin looks purple(ish) and different than a typical molt.
I know broody/mama hens have a molt at some point and don't know if this is simply that or if she has a pest problem or something. Would appreciate any thoughts or advice. We sprayed it with Vetericyn earlier, just as a precaution.
