So, I’m assuming that because I’ve had a broody hen for about 20 days, that the rest of the chickens feel the need to reestablish the pecking order when she comes out to eat once a day. Is this normal? Is there a chance they’ll be aggressive with the chick she hopefully hatches within the next few days?

There really is no handbook of chicken behavior, no more than there is one to guide you on human behavior. Behavior is a mix of genetics, hormones, environmental stresses and pathogens.

But one thing that is common in all flocks with a broody hen is the broody behavior annoys the heck out of everyone. If that broody hen was in your space 24/7, clucking like a maddening motorboat, you'd be ready to peck her on the head, too.

Don't worry. Broodies are an ornery bunch and can take care of themselves.

Hahaha, you’re right! It is annoying. Thank you!
