new mama in rain - won't budge

I couldnt imagine having to sneak my pets in the house to keep them safe because my husband doesnt care about them. thats just me

I think that Mama Knows Best. I've seen my Mama hens get soaked in one of our heavy tropical Florida rains but the chickies stay nice & fuzzy & dry under her wings. I don't think a hen would stay sitting in puddles deep enough to drown her chicks. She may have some reason of her own that she doesn't want to stay in the coop. I wouldn't take her chicks away and I don't think it's necessary to bring them indoors.

I'd just try to improve the site she's chosen, add a tarp or some kind of cover to make it more waterproof

hi and thanks to all, mama and babies are just fine (worried about nothing) she stayed put all night where she was. I checked on them first thing this morning and she was a little wetter then I would have liked but babies were all up underneath her all warm and dry as can be.
I thought it over and figured that there is a reason why she moved them out of the coop, maybe another chicken being mean or something, so I decided to rig her something nice where she has decided to sit with her babies, I had some extra wood lying around, so I made a cover for her so I do not have to worry about her being wet and since she is a bantam it did not have to be very big, I also added a cat carrieras an added protection from the outside world which I can lock up at night so I do not have to worry about predators (not that I have ever had any problems, but you can never be to careful)
as soon as I put all the ammendities to her little area she hoped right into the carrier and made her self at home, she seemed to know that I was making it safe for her and apologizing for not being able to do much last night with the rain.

I just went out to check on them and she had them out grazing a bit, not far from her new living quarters and they are just as cute as a button. I will be adding pics soon!

don't get me wrong, my husband loves my birds but he works long hours on the road and he just doesn't want to hear chirps thru the night (or day depends on his shift) he already has to listen to 4 kids, lol, we do not have a garage so the only place for them is in the house and he has already been thru 2 hatchings with them being inside so after the last one he told me he did not get good sleep when they were in the house and he had almost fallen asleep at the wheel once, and the baby chicks are not worth my husband safety, so I just wanted to clarify its not that he really doesn't want them in the house because he does not like them but rather his safety at work could be at jepordy, and nothing is worth that

will probably get the pics tommorrow, fixing dinner now and by the time it is all done and cleaned up , it probably be to late to get a good pic

Montcapu, it sounds like you've made a nice place for your chicken family, I look forward to seeing the pictures. I've got several bantams who go broody periodically and have found that they can almost always be trusted to do a good job protecting their chicks. I wouldn't bring a chicken family indoors unless there was an actual hurricane blowing over. And I certainly wouldn't eject a family member and send them to a motel in order to bring an animal into the house.

I can totally relate to that. I have roosters, that crow all night long. First thing in the morning my african grey parrot starts up. I should of thought of that. I am sorry. This is the first time that I am going to let my hen that is setting on eggs care for her hatchlings. I am worried sick about it. The eggs are not cheap eggs and so far everything is alive.
Keep hubby rested. You're right that is far more important

i did not want to sound like I was upset about what you said, I know that at late hours things do not come out as you think they should, but I was so worried about my little ones out there that is all I was thinking of, I might of got 2 hrs of sleep worry about them out there, but they were fine and everything is going good for the 5 day olds

I was worried that you were going to take me the wrong way when I told you to ship your husband to a hotel. It's all good. No hard feelings for me. I am a little to spoiled for my own good
