Hi everyone!

I've used Byc for the past few months and finally decided to officially join the forums. I'm a stay at home Mom of 3 teenagers, 2 dogs, 1 cat, 1 turtle and more recently 3 barred rock chicks. Our oldest daughter is special needs and their class received 21 eggs to hatch to learn about the life cycle. Only 3 hatched and my daughter fell in love so she asked to keep them! Needless to say haha we had only a couple of days to come up with a brooder and a coop and find all we could about hatchlings.
Byc was a life saver and all the "babies" are doing great. We have 2 girls and a roo, they're 12 wks old. I'd rather not have a roo, ours is already snippy when you go into the coop so gloves are a must. (He hasn't attacked us, he's mostly making sure his girls are safe.) I'll have to add pictures later :)

Welcome to BYC!

I bet the kids in your daughter's class enjoyed seeing the eggs hatch. That's great you could give them a home! Barred Plymouth Rocks are wonderful birds and once they get older you'll have some nice large light brown eggs from them. Be careful with the roo, they can hurt you with those spurs. You might want to use the search box in the upper left corner to find posts on how to tame a rooster.

It's nice having you join us and if you have questions, feel free to ask.

Good luck with your flock!

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Sorry you got stuck with a roo, I would imagine there is no good way to explain to your daughter that he needs a new home. Unfortunately he is showing his aggression early. I would expect him to get worse as he matures. He may very well abuse the girls because a rooster can handle 10 females and he has only 2. That might be another good way to announce he needs to be rehomed.

Maybe you area doesn't allow roosters so he would definitely have to move on.

Thank you all :)

Unfortunately she already knows roosters are allowed,we live in farm country lol. He's not snippy all the time, it's normally if the girls get spooked while I'm doing something within the coop.
I'll definitely be checking the suggestions for 'taming' a rooster. That should be interesting haha. If worse comes to worse maybe building him his own little house will be in the future if he gets too rough with the girls.

Thank you all

Here are a couple of articles from the Learning Center, I'm sure there are many more posts in the forums:
