Hey everyone -

Long-time lurker, first-time member/poster!

I spent the last six months prepping as best I could for chickens and finally took the plunge, getting six baby chicks a couple of weeks ago. They are adorable and messy, just as everyone said they would be. I settled on six breeds: black australorp, olive egger (I know, it's technically not a breed), cream legbar, barred rock, speckled sussex, and a blue-laced barnevelder. I've done my best to assess which babies are which breeds, but maybe someone could confirm if I'm correct. I'm hoping they are all female as I live in the suburbs and can't have a rooster.

I'm a bit skeptical that Nan is the Black Australorp she was supposed to be. She has started to develop puffy cheeks and to my [admittedly limited] knowledge, I don't believe Australorps have puffy cheeks...

Here she is at about 2 weeks, sleeping in my hand (she is just the sweetest little chick!).

You can see her puffy cheeks a bit better in this pic (2+ weeks) - she is the third black baby, next to the box.

Thanks, everyone!!

Welcome to BYC, I love your choice of breeds, and your chick pics are all adorable! Hmmn, no Australorps aren't supposed to have cheeks, so as @DobieLover said, Nan may be an Easter Egger. But Australorps arent supposed to have "skirts" either, but, well, here is a picture of my sweet black Australorp named Ruffles. She also has a couple of white-tipped tail feathers, so who knows what genetics ocassionally enter into play in some hatchery chicks.

I feel sure your Nan will continue to be very sweet-natured no matter what color egg she eventually lays.🙂
