New Member--2Boys1Homestead

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I actually met you already on another thread regarding the differences between Araucanas and Ameraucanas (and Easter Eggers). You have a very thorough introduction so I am actually learning something about you on this thread. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whether you decide to get Araucanas, Ameraucanas, or Easter Eggers, good luck with your flock and your homesteading.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

You have come to the right place for all the learning and fun! Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry from building the coop, picking the breeds, raising the chicks and keeping your adult flock happy, healthy and safe from predators...https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

If you still have any questions, that is what we are here for.

Good luck on this new journey and welcome to our flock!

I actually have a question (I'll post it in other threads in the Duck section too), but can ducks be good layers? And do they get along well with chickens??

Metzer farms has a nice duck comparison chart that includes egg production... some of the layer type ducks are as good as many chicken breeds,200-290 eggs a year. http://www.metzerfarms.com/DuckBreedComparison.cfm?CustID=2854688 Duck hens are usually fine with chickens, you want to be very careful keeping drakes with chicken hens since they can severely injure them trying to mate with them (usually recommended keeping only in a free range or ample space type setting where you have a good duck hen/ drake ratio). The other main problem with keeping ducks and chickens together is the ducks need for water, and how they are really really messy with it, so it take some doing to keep things clean and dry.
