Hello, I'm Mark
I've had chickens as a kid and helped out with a flock when I rented a place on a ranch but now I have my own 6 acre place and got my own chickens a bit over a year ago and have had nothing but problems with predators (coyote), an unwanted big fat mean roo, diseases like CRD, Egg drop syndrome....my chicken experience is not living up to my expectations unfortunately. With six hens I'm lucky to get one egg a day with all of the diseases. I don't remember having all of these diseases back in the 1980s.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Sorry you are having so much trouble. I did too my first year. Chickens are over bred, especially these hatchery breeds. People also love to sell off sick birds for some reason. You definitely need to be careful where you get your birds, use a reputable breeder and maybe go with heritage breeds. They are more pure. Bad genetics get handed down in poorly bred Chickens.

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours!

Welcome to BYC.
I'm sorry you are having so much stress.
I think because chickens are so popular now, that disease gets passed around more easily.
In my parents and grandparents days of farming, chickens hatched and raised their own chicks. People delt with their own roosters. It was rare to bring new adult chickens into the flock.
I rarely use Facebook anymore. When I did, I noticed how many people, in the chicken groups, chatted about sick chickens, and then continued to sell hatching eggs, pullets, and roosters, without hesitation, or regard for other flocks.

Hi Mark, Welcome to byc :welcome :frow I am having similar frustrations with my two Orpington hens going through all kinds of parasite pests and sickness issues with them that I never had with my ducks or geese for the past seven years. But we love them so we don’t give up.. i’m starting to see a little light at the end of the tunnel
