Hi,
My name is Kimberley Cherry. My husband, Steve and I have built an awesome small coop with a secured and large run, where we hope to have 4 chickens some day.
We have decided that since we are newbie chicken parents, it would be best to put off buying them until the spring when we have better weather to have our first experience. We are retired designers, artists, woodworkers, living on Lake Huron on 20 acres of Paradise. We have a malamute, named Lucca and our neighbors, immediate neighbors are those of the woods...moose, bear, coyote, hawks, eagles.
I would appreciate advice on buying laying hens in the spring...The breeds I am interested in are: Barred Plymouth Rock, Rhode Island Red, Black austrlop, and Leghorn. There are plenty of Mennonite farmers in this area and others that are raising chickens. Supplies are nearby at our local Hardware and Feed Store.
We like the idea of being on this forum, where we can learn from others, get advice and hear of other adventures in chicken world.

Hi Kimberley!

Fellow Michigander here! (Michigoose? Michihen?) I love my Black Australorps, so I always recommend them. You guys are really planning ahead; good for you. Stop by BYC often and read up on any and everything chicken. You may find you want to expand your coop and get more than four when you hear how addictive/much fun/entertaining they are. Chicken math is a real thing. I plan to get more next spring too, and can't wait for winter to be over. Oh, wait it hasn't even started.

Welcome and enjoy.

Welcome Kimberley & Steve to BYC.
We are very egg-cited that you decided to join us before you added your selected flock. Many on here are very knowledgeable and forthcoming with education.
Do you have any particular breed or what your intentions are for your flock?
If so, this is the place to ask. If not, this is the place to ask.
Make sure your county laws permit you to raise chickens and if so, thats great! But, remember with a small flock, you will need at least 10 Pullets(females) per 1 Cockerel (male).
So, having a Male with less is only asking for trouble.
Welcome to this phenomenal group of chicken enthusiasts.
