Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is David and I live in Northern Virginia.

My father-in-law and a close friend both raise chickens and have been trying to get me to build a coop for years since we live on 6 acres. I finally took the plunge last month. I have spent the last week or so reading this forum and find it to be a wonderful place!

Here are a few pictures. Be easy on me...I am far from a carpenter!

4' x 8' coop with an 8' x 8' run. Oak fence boards on the side of the coop.

Thanks for having me!

Welcome and that is a real nice coop and run!!!You say you're not a carpenter, but your work looks great. Maybe you don't know that you're a carpenter!

Welcome to BYC! You did a fantastic job ... Kudos to you. Your chickens will be very happy in there.

However... I'm concerned about using only chicken wire around the run (at least that's what it looks like). You've done such a great job with it all I'd so hate to see you lose any chickens to predators.

Chicken wire is to keep chickens in only ... it will not keep almost any predator out. Is it possible to wrap the whole thing with 2x4 welded wire? Have you buried the chicken wire into the ground? That would also help so nothing digs underneath.

Yea, I spent the last hour reading about that very topic. I plan on adding the hardware cloth/welded wire at least to the bottom 2 feet around.

You're gonna laugh but...my friend got 30 of them as chics and I can't remember what he said they were. (where is the embarrassed emoticon!)

He is coming over for poker tomorrow evening and I plan on asking him again.
