Hi I am Peg - so I don't have chickens yet but our city has just approved an ordinance granting a pilot program. I was going to do it earlier but held off bc of this bird flu thing and we are putting in a new privacy fence so chickens put on hold until now.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? VERY NEWBIE!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Zero. After we get approved, will have 3 hens. We are here to learn prior to doing this.
(3) What breeds do you have? I need help with this. What is best?
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Not having to worry about $5/dozen eggs and supply chain issues!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Growing my own food, mountains, enjoying nature
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. We have a Ragdoll cat (indoors) and two dogs. One of which will love to eat a chicken if he ever gets the chance, so I have to be careful.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? Facebook. I'm searching for groups or places to learn best practices and research! I had no idea BYC was this big of a thing!! I have a lot to learn like best runs, coops, which hens to buy, feed, well just about everything.

Hi and welcome! I’m newer too. And also new to the chicken world also! We just bought 3.5 acres in the country and I have always wanted chickens. So my husband and I dived right in. We ordered 15 rainbow mix and received 18. We have no idea what we have (boy/girl or even the breeds). But if I’m right about some of the breeds that I’m guessing on, I won’t hold a candle to the chickens behavior and temperament in the information I have read. 😂

Welcome!
I applaud anyone who comes here 1st. Those who get their animals first are kind of behind the 8 Ball. I didn't do this, although I had a fence up for a garden.
With that being said there is a great article entitled what I learned about Avian Flu.
As far as "What is the best starter chicken"? It is completely up to what and why you want chickens or Ducks (My favorite) or turkey's or geese. They all produce eggs, but so do alligators.
Do you have small Children around, so they need to be friendly?
Do they need to be quiet? (Quiet is more of a character trait, not a inherited definition) Do you plan on eating the meat?
etc....
Good luck!

I can only have chicken hens at this time. No alligators ;-) no small children, either. Even they are noisy, no one will likely hear them over the neighborhood kids and dogs. We are putting in a privacy fence (replacing older chainlink) so it'll be hard to even see them albeit we only have a 1/3 acre lot. I don't plan on eating meat, just eggs.
