New member and new to all of this!

Hi I am Peg - so I don't have chickens yet but our city has just approved an ordinance granting a pilot program. I was going to do it earlier but held off bc of this bird flu thing and we are putting in a new privacy fence so chickens put on hold until now.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? VERY NEWBIE!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Zero. After we get approved, will have 3 hens. We are here to learn prior to doing this.
(3) What breeds do you have? I need help with this. What is best?
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Not having to worry about $5/dozen eggs and supply chain issues!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Growing my own food, mountains, enjoying nature
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. We have a Ragdoll cat (indoors) and two dogs. One of which will love to eat a chicken if he ever gets the chance, so I have to be careful.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? Facebook. I'm searching for groups or places to learn best practices and research! I had no idea BYC was this big of a thing!! I have a lot to learn like best runs, coops, which hens to buy, feed, well just about everything.
Welcome Peg I'm glad you're going to be able to get into raising egg laying hens. It would help (on breed and coop ?) to know where in the world you are. I'm from SW Neb. so my breeds need to tolerate colder winters but also 100s in summer. So no little girl s here. I can close down my coop in winter from flying snow if needed. Folks in FL can have one whole wall of co-op be open with wire only.
There's lots of info here in the article section ( which is the icon that looks like a dog-eared page up above on screen. ) Chickens are great fun , some breeds lay more than others, some are colored egg layers, etc. Lots of choices ! I have hens that lay pretty regular and I do sell some eggs monthly to friends to help pay for their feed. I love to know where my food is coming from, not have to worry about shortages, and not pay $$ for eggs. Good luck ask any questions folks here are great help.
