Hi, how is everyone today? My name is Jamie Vasquez, and I am a new member.

Since I was a kid, I've always wanted to have chickens. I remember falling in love with the Rhode Island Reds at a 4H show in Cheyenne when my mom took me there. I wanted to raise some of my own right then and there, but, alas, it wasn't the right time. My husband and I discussed having chickens a few years ago, and after preparing our yard and neighbors, I finally got my first 8 chicks in June. As it goes with chicks, however, sometimes they die and I lost three in the first two weeks. That hurt more than I expected. I have five strong girls, and recently adopted a rooster that needed a good home. My chickens will primarily be pets, so they will live their entire, natural lives with me, although my family will benefit from the eggs.

My girls are Cupcake, a red-and-blue laced Wyandotte, Sugar (I have no idea what she is; she was supposed to be a silver-laced Wyandotte), and Toffee, Sprinkles, and Strawberry, the RIRs (of course I had to have some of them :D ). Odin is my Red Copper Marans rooster. He is a work in progress, as I don't know a lot about his background. He was surrendered to a shelter at 5 weeks old and lived with other roosters only. He is now around 5 months old, so he is a bit old to go with my girls just yet. Odin is getting socialized with members of the family slowly, as he is a bit fearful and tries to scare us with a quite hilarious "rooster shuffle" when we enter his enclosure. He still won't take treats directly and he still doesn't care for being held, but he is a rooster, after all, so we don't expect him to be as cuddly as the girls.

So much of what I have read in these forums has helped me a lot, so I would like to extend a huge thanks to everyone who posts here. I appreciate you all and love seeing your flocks!

Here's a pic of my sweetest Red, Strawberry, at one month old. She's always been social and curious.
