Hello, All.

My name is Bonnie Blue, and I am new to the whole chicken thing. New, as in I don't even have chickens yet, and I want to learn more before I dive in. Having laying hens is something I have considered off and on for years, but life is finally to the point I can devote time to having some. I hope to learn so that I may get started on the right foot!

About me: Single mom to a geriatric Weimaraner, who is my heart. (No two-legged children.) I live in a suburban neighborhood, so I will only be able to have a few hens (I am thinking 3 to 5), and they need to be friendly and fairly quiet. My late father had chickens (and quail and guineas), and picking up his hobby just seems natural. Sadly, I never learned about chickens from him. Edit to add: I live in south Louisiana.

I am pretty sure I know what breed I want to start with (leading contender is Buff Orpingtons), and right now, I am focusing on coop and run research. I do not know if I want to build from scratch, modify a small storage shed, or buy a kit. I am quite handy with power tools and building things, so the first two options is very doable.

I look forward to the interactions and learning.

Cheers.
