Hi All,
I decided to go ahead and join BYC. What a great source of information. Thanks to this site and you're inputs, I have successfully been raising chickens for about 5 months. I built my coop, nesting box, feeder etc. by reading posts on this site and felt I needed to join in order to hopefully help someone else. Anytime I have a question about anything pertaining to chickens, I just search the forums and there it is!
A little about me, I live in Eucalyptus Hills which is located in San Diego county. Since we are unincorporated we enjoy a lot of freedoms when it comes to livestock in our neighborhood and I love that about where I live. Most people don't think of horses, goats, pigs, cows and chickens when they think of San Diego but that's why we live where we do. Anyway, my wife and I have a daughter who is pretty much the chicken whisperer of the family and adores her flock (she's in my avatar) The experience of raising chickens has been great for her to learn about taking care of them and responsibility, as well as death unfortunately, but that's all part of life too. So far our flock consists of 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Wyondots (her favorites) and 3 Americauna's. One of the Americaunas died after a few weeks and we felt that we should to get two more so they would be the same age and not get picked on by the others. But they all get along great and never di get oicked on. We have gotten our first couple eggs from one of the Wyandots already and are excited for them to go into full production.
