Stuff happens out of our control sometimes,Yes, unfortunately. I guess I got too comfortable in being able to avoid Marek’s and let my guard down. We took a few birds from a friend who was getting rid of them recently. They all seem fine, but they may be carriers nonetheless. We also had a farm vet come to our house on an emergency call for a baby goat we have and, as he goes from farm to farm all day, I didn’t even think about biosecurity when he came over. I was so worried about the little doeling that was going to die (she pulled through!) that I didn’t think about him bringing possible Marek dander from another farm either.Those are the most likely scenarios.
Marek's is becoming so common, you won't be alone in it. And as bad as Marek's is, keepers learn to deal with it, there may be heavy losses at first but eventually things calm down, there will be survivors. If you find out you do have Marek's in your flock, talk to people here on BYC, there are many members here that have been living with it for many years. The more you know about it, the more at ease you will be. And comradary helps soothe the mind as well.
