Hi Sue...Welcome to the madness of being owned by chickens! Before you know it....you will have a countertop lined with incubators.!

Have fun with your projects. What breeds will you be looking to get? Im sure there are a few more OKIES on here, that could help ya with the "best breeds" for your area. ( climate wise)

Welcome Sue, and what a wonderful time ahead of you, being able to "retire" from what you were doing and begin brand new adventures. All the best!

(p.s. The property looks really lovely...)

Welcome aboard. Sounds exciting - your move and all. You'll really love having chooks. They are so much fun. You'll find the best advice here - it's called experience. Over the last 6 mos that I've been on the forum I've learned an enormouse amount and it's paid off for my chooks.

Now that you're good to go with uploading photos, please keep us posted (w/pics) on your progress.

What a nice warm welcome, thank you.

I won't be getting my chickie girls any time real soon. I want the coop completely redone first, new run, feed in barrels and ready. Everything done before my first arrivals. I won't even be able to move out there until I sell this house.

Although I do love chicken (to eat) I don't have it in me to kill my dinner, so, for now at least, I'm only interested in the eggs. Actually I want them mostly because I think they're cute and would be fun to watch. My Son-in-law will be right across the road and says he'd have no problem with it, but still...

I've been reading and looking at pictures and love the look of the Wyandottes. And with the variety of colors, one could have a really colorful little flock with only a few chickens.

The existing coop is 7' x 8 1/2', so it's big enough for 6 or 8 hens. Knowing me, the number will probably grow as I get more and more addicted. At the beginning at least I think I'd be best off starting with pullets, although I don't know where I'll find them.

Is there anyone with experience in a very warm summer climate with Wyandottes? I'll be putting regular windows on the south and east sides of the coop, that open. A big window fan also won't be a problem as there is electricity out there. And the coop is completely surrounded by trees so it's real shady for summer.

I have plenty of time to plan, at least a couple months, before I even start the coop rebuild.

Welcome aboard, I would like to be the first to ADD to you addiction, 60 sqft is enough room for 15 chickens. It is recommended 4 sqft/bird large breeds. Mine are more crowded, but mine freerange all day, so I feel they are only crowded when they sleep. So if you freerange or have a big run you could even have MORE. You havent even got your first and we want you to expand.

Hi Sue!
Welcome to the forum. In case you haven't noticed, we are enablers and love telling newbies that they need MORE CHICKENS!

I have Wyandottes (in Southern California which, trust me, gets pretty hot) and they do well in the heat. I also have trees in the run and they like being able to sun bathe but then go under a tree when it gets too hot. They seem to take the heat better than my Cochins, which are also a heavy breed. But, the Cochins have the feathered feet and the fluffy petticoat!

I have Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, which seem to be a forum favorite, but you're right- they come in all kinds of beautiful colors and they've become a fast favorite for me.

Hey fellow OKie. I just want to make sure that you go to the Okies in the BYC thread on where am I where r u? I think someone was talking about the Wyandottes on there just the other day. What part of the state are you in there are a few different places to get started pullets and hens depending on where you live.
