Hello All,

My wife and I decided to start our flock as an opportunity to foster a connection between our children and agriculture. We additionally have a quarter acre garden we tend to as well.

Although we are new to chickens, exotic animal husbandry is something I did while working in zoo settings. My focus was primarily large reptiles however.

We started with 11 chicks, but once we transitioned outside we learned pretty quick that we needed to out fence, not out smart, our fox. We went down to 6 in one fell swoop and learned to nurse a sprained leg in the process. We sought a rooster, which we inadvertently saved from a setting with a massive SLM infestation - so we accidentally becoming proficient in treating for SLM. Since then we have been building out the flock.

I'm always going to admit we have no idea what we are doing, but we learn from our mistakes and are always more than willing to share our honest experiences for the benefit of others!

We currently have:
1x Sasso Scarlet
2x Sasso Ciara
1x Sasso Ivory
1x Azure Blue
2x Red Sex-Link
1x Silkie
1x Cochin

1x ROO Silver Maran (?)

Since I have been lurking the community boards for awhile, I figured it was about time to join!

A tough beginning but sounds like you're doing well now, thank goodness. Sorry about the ones you lost; predators have a way of reshuffling your thinking in a hurry.

What an interesting flock of pretty-feathered birds!

Working at a zoo -- especially with large reptiles -- must have been an incredible experience. Of course, as you've learned, so is working with chickens :),

Glad you decided to join, best wishes with your flock and your garden!
