Hello!

Welcome to BYC and the coop! There's a lot of great peeps here! Feel free to ask lots of questions. But most of all, make yourself at home. I'm so glad you decided to join the BYC family. I look forward to seeing you around BYC.

I have 3 backyard chickens and found thi site very helpful.[/[
I am a fellow Albertan looking to purchase 3-5 heritage chickens in June. Could you share which type of chickens you have, for how long you have had them and how you have found the experience so far?

I have 3 chickens in a backyard coop. One is a speckled sussex, a buff orpington and a black orpington. My favorite is the buff orp. She is the most friendly and curious as well as laying the largest, darkest colored eggs(same as XL from the store). They are all very hardy and I get about 15 eggs a week. I do not heat my coop but it is insulated. I built a waterer out of an old insulated lunch kit, a chicken nipple and a walmart fish tank heater. This keeps the coop about 8 degrees C warmer than outside.
I am considering getting a welsummer if one comes up on kijiji.
