Hello Fellow Chicken Enthusiasts,
I have been on this site for all of the amazing info that is posted. Thank you to everyone who helps people like me enjoy these funny little creatures. I wanted to introduce myself but have a problem I was hoping for some advice. I have 3 kids who love our chickens but my 6 yo daughter is an animal lover.

I have 5 chickens of various breeds, 2 10 mo pullets and 3 1-year old hens, 2 egg layers so far. One of my chickens, who is the one my 6 yo daughter is holding in the avatar picture, injured her leg at least 2 months ago. I checked for everything that could be causing her pain (bumble foot, fractures, infection) and it appears to be coming from her hip. It's not dislocated or swollen. As a physician, I checked her for anything I could think would cause pain. She was putting some weight on it and hopping around the yard, getting up and down the ladder of coop. But now she can't walk at all. She sits in 1 place and wobbles. She's alert and still eats and drinks. We have her in a box in the house now. What am I missing. Is this Merrick's. I don't know her vaccination history since I bought her off a young girl raising her chickens in the country here. My other chickens are fine.

I wanted to ask if anyone thinks it's cruel of me to consider euthanasia. I see her suffering and I can't fix her or make her more comfortable. I see my daughter care for her and it is slowly breaking my heart. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Sorry this is my introduction to the group. Hopefully my next posts will be more positive.

Hello, and welcome to BYC!

I'm glad you joined our community.

I'm sorry to hear about your injured/sick hen! I suggest posting in the Emergencies section for some advice on what could be wrong with her. I would lean towards it being a disease rather than an injury, but it can be hard to tell.

I don't think that anybody on here would consider it cruel to humanely euthanize an injured bird. When their quality of life becomes too low or they just won't get better, it is often the best thing to do. I've had to do it only a couple of times, but it has always been for the bird's best interest.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Sorry to hear you have an injured hen. It is very difficult when they show no obvious symptoms of the ailment. I would certainly post in the emergencies section left in the link for you by Chicken Girl1. I would certainly not think it cruel to consider euthanasia, I had to make the very hard decision myself with my most favourite bird. If they have no quality of life it is the best option for them in my opinion. It was hard I'm not saying it's easy but in the long run I knew it was right for him. So he would not be suffering any longer.

Wishing you the best of luck I hope the experts over in the emergencies section can offer you more help :hugs

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your hen, hope she recovers. X4 sometimes euthanizing a hurting bird is the kindest thing we can do for them.

Yes, she is interested in food and water. Her leg has atrophied now and she can't even stand. It's so pitiful.
