Hi...I just put 4 Barred Rock chicks under my broody White Leghorn for a friend of mine. I have that hen and two Ameracaunas and also two of what appear to be Redcaps (I got them from a family moving back to civilization). I am very sad to be without Buff Orpingtons at the moment though I am excited to see the personality of the Rock hens I am raising for my friend. They already amaze me with their energy - jumping up and hanging off of "Angel"s" wattles by their beaks. Pretty funny.

Hi All, I love this site. I guess chicken people are as great as chickens. My dream flock. Buff Orpingtons, Plymouth Rocks and Ameracaunas. Oh, I do speak chicken. This last group of hens are the smart friendly hens I've always wanted. They have taught me their language. You all know the "I've laid an egg!" cackle and the "Here is food!" chuckle. Then there is the Pwweeeee said sweetly which means "It's OK, Your safe". There is Bop, bop, bop, bop said softly which means "We are all settled and happy". There is Arrrrrrrr with a rising end which is a warming cry and very scary coming from trees at night. I can't write the warning "growl" when there are chicks to protect. You may have more and certain breeds have their own little ... oh, there is the soft brrrrrp trill of happy chicks. I was in a friend's coop with her and noticed the hens were a little uneasy at my entrance so I uttered the "It's OK, your safe" sound. The hens looked up at me surprised and then went about their business. My friend was VERY amused.
