Hello, fellow Iowan! My family had chickens when I was a kid in southern Iowa (I'm up near Fort Dodge now), but they certainly lived had more "rugged" living conditions than my spoiled pets. When I think about how and where our chickens lived, it's a wonder any of them every made it to adulthood.

Pastel-colored, dyed chicks were really popular when I was a kid, a practice I have been happy to see go by the wayside.

This is a great community of folks who have knowledge about every aspect of raising poultry. There are people here who can and will help you every step of the way. Let us know how your chicken adventure is progressing.

Welcome to our flock!

I am very new to raising chickens. So new that I do not have any nor have I built a pen for them yet. My hope by joining this group and Back Yard Chickens is to learn as much as I can before I go any further. I live on about three acres in NE Iowa. Besides my human family we have a golden retriever and a Cavalier King Charles. They are both my house Velcro dogs . My husband and I are both retired. I have an adult son who lives with us and he will be helping with the chickens.

Okay, back to the being new to chickens. lol While I feel like a newbie I grew up about a block from a local business that sold feed, chickens etc and it was common for a chicken or two to "escape" and find their way to our house, probably because we had a huge three stall garage (use to be the carriage house) and the door was usually open. When I was in kindergarten my class visited his business and each child was allowed to take home three baby chicks if they thought it was okay with their parents. Most of us said YES! Will a couple of my friends were not allowed to keep their chickens so they came to live with us. lol We sure did not get very fancy in keeping them. I think we did what was called free range. We must have fed them well though as most stuck around until....hmmm I am not sure what ever happened to them. I do know two things. 1. As kids we refused to eat chicken upon occasion. 2. My dad helped to die one of the chickens blue for the local parade and my sister won first prize for having the chicken that laid the golden egg. While it did not hurt the chicken I would not do that. In case anyone is concerned.

Thank you for letting me be a part of this group.
Welcome! I too am from Iowa
