Hello,
My husband and my two young sons live in Hawaii and are new to the chicken world. Despite the fact that Kauai has wild chickens running all over the place! My cousin, who lives in California told me about this site. I’ve been interested in having chickens for eggs/pets for some time now. Yesterday, we found a baby chick near the beach that was separated from its mother, whom we couldn’t find. I think it’s a female. So, now we are on the fast track! I need to build a coop (first time) and figure out how many chickens to get (4-5?) and from where. I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can about raising backyard chickens. We have a dog, who we are keeping separate from the baby chick. Where we leave, there aren’t many natural predators aside from dogs and owls. We will still need a secure coop. I love the idea of our boys (6 and 3) learning how to care for animals and raise them for food (eggs).
Aloha,
Yvette
