I have referred to the knowledge given on Backyard Chickens over this past summer which is my first summer of owning chickens. I finally thought "Why haven't I joined?" So here I am.

Keeping chickens has been a lifelong dream and after working to take care of my husband and daughter for the past five years I thought that it is time to do something for myself. I ordered my flock from Murray McMurray (don't say it; they were the first to show up on the search engine and I didn't know better at the time!) in March and got my girls and a few boys in May. They have done well except for the occasional hawk and their visits to the neighbors to uproot her garden. I am looking to expand my flock and maybe narrow my scope a bit from 10 breeds to just a few and eventually show.

We finished our barn restoration this summer and a third of the barn is devoted to their coop and they have a 20' by 20' run. It is almost done. They are in a temporary coop converted from a greenhouse when I'm not home. Usually they are let out to roam free for a few hours when I get home from work. I will share pics sometime. They just started laying, but not as much as I would expect from 18 hens. I will address that on another thread.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Oh, I have ordered eggs from Murray McMurray and had great success with that hatchery. So I think you did good!

Make yourself at home here and ask any questions you may have. Welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join us. Actually Murray McMurray has been one of four different hatcheries that I've ordered birds from on multiple occasions over the years, and I've been happy with their birds and service. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chickens did you get?

I got 3 Barred Rocks, 3 Red Leghorns, 3 Silver Laced Wyandottes, 3 Buttercups (Lost two

) 3 Andalusians, 3 Buff Orpingtons, 3 Light Brahmas, and 1 Salmon Favorelle cockerel. I must have drove whoever packed them nuts! They did well though. I got an extra wyandotte and a polish as the free exotic. The buttercups had something physically wrong with them and died pretty quickly. My one hen who has matured is great though. I don't think I will order again from them only because of the Friday shipping thing and wanting to get better stock with known history. I was a nervous wreck on Sunday thinking of the chicks sitting in the post office all day and night. I know... I'm just a worrier.
