About year ago we moved out of the suburbs into the country. Now that we are settled, we are ready for some chickens. We have placed an order (Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Red, Pearl White Leg Horn, Light Brahmas, Buff Rocks, Red Leg Horn, and Black Minorca) and we have begun building our coop (8' x 8', raised 18" off the ground and wired for electrical). This site has been extremely helpful in all areas of chicken research and I am very excited to be an active participate.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Hoe exciting for you to be starting out on your chicken journey :celebrate You are going to have a lovely mixed flock there. Lovely to hear BYC has been so helpful for you already.
Wishing you the very best of luck with your new adventure. Good luck with your coop build. Be sure to ask any questions you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly.
Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Great flock! I have Barred Rocks and White Leghorns.

Welcome to BYC; I glad you joined the flock!

How many birds do you expect to have in all?

Rule of thumb is to allow 4-5 sq.feet per bird in the coop - excluding nest boxes and roosts. In the outdoor run it's 10 sq.feet per bird. If chickens are too crowded they push back - by fighting, feather plucking, bullying, and sometimes cannibalism. Chickens are flock animals but, are not attached at the wing. They require some personal space and a large dust bathing area - the chicken version of spa treatments.

Welcome to Backyard chickens, hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Enjoy the breeds you've chosen. Buff orps are my favorite breed! Good luck with your coop project! Keep us posted on it and be sure to post pics when it's done
