Hello all, I just have a little flock of chickens, a drake and 2 ganders. Really enjoying reading some of the topics, and hoping to meet people in my area!

Hello, and welcome from mid-MO. We've had our hens 1 1/2 years now, beginning with mid-age hens found in this area through Craigslist. These grown hens and helpful information on this site helped us learn how to keep chickens--and we love it. We have fourteen standard hens of mixed varieties and this spring, using our Silkies as willing adoptive moms, we added five Araucana chicks and eight mixed variety chicks from Orscheln Spring Chick sale. They are developing into fine young pullets now and should be good fresh layers by fall or early winter. I now have to think about finding retirement homes for the older hens to live out their lives while producing some eggs (thinking of our son who could use some hens to keep down insects in his orchard-just have to find him a coop!). Are you in town or country? I notice that Columbia has just approved limited backyard chickens and our nearby town of Ashland is discussing the same. Enjoy this forum! ~G

Hi BiddyBoo! I am a little north of Centralia on a few acres, free range everyone and have hunted out most of the predators so other than occasional hawks they are pretty well protected. I have about 18 hens, 4 roosters, and everyone is pretty happy! I am looking for some adult ducks now, my husband has an allergy to chicken egg albumum (or something like that

) so I am on the hunt now! I am surprised that it took Columbia so long to allow the chickens, hopefully Ashland will "get with the times".
