Hi, everyone,
I'm new to the list and fairly new to chickens. We're a small horse farm in northcentral NC. Currently, we have only 4 hens: 1 Buckeye cross, 2 Blue Copper Marans, and 1 Gold Buff Marans. Sadly, a predator took our beautiful Silver Cuckoo Marans rooster about two weeks ago.
We let our chickens roam our farm most days and they go back to roost in their pen at night. Our Gold Buff hen went missing the end of December and we feared the worst, but found her around New Year's Day in an abandoned dog house, calmly sitting on 16 eggs! It was the first time any of our girls had gone broody since we got them early last spring. It seemed odd because it was so early (and cold!), but we left her alone. Last Monday, we were blessed with 12 sweet little chicks. Because the temps dropped to the teens overnight last week, we brought the babies into the house and put them under a heat lamp. So far, they're doing well, and we're thankful for the legacy from our rooster.
I look forward to learning from you all!
