Hi!
My husband and kids and I are very new to the world of chickens. We have an acre of land and built a cute coop and a large garden this spring. In the spring, We bought 6 chicks in the hopes to get 6 hens and ended up with 6 roosters - go figure! So we traded some and gave some away. We are left with 4 hens - a white hen 'Snowball', a black hen 'Blackie', a spotted Sussex I believe named Julie and a Barred Rock 'Minnie'. We love our girls. We just gave away our last rooster tonight as he was over mating and really aggressive with two of our hens and hurt them. So I'm hoping they heal up ok. I love to have them and hope they do well. It's great to read all of the advice on here from all of you who have had chickens for much longer! ;)

Thanks! Me too! Poor girls have been hiding in their heating boxes for the last few days. I hope they get better.

Does your BR (?)have some sort of large swelling on her left foot? It looks that way from the photo. I can see the feather loss near tail that rooster did to her.

Welcome to BYC. And I hope your hens will heal up very fast. And one question did you see the roosters do a weird dance before it mated with the hen?

Hi guys, I have 2 hens and just got a rooster, the coop is a small one, 2 nesting boxes and 2 roosting racks. Is this too small a space for the Rooster to be housed there at night, I'm afraid he'll injure them and have kept him separate, he's only been here 2 days, he's still young 15 weeks old? Also one of the hens is broody and hasn't been coming home at night, she visits to eat and then goes again so it would only be the one hen in with the Rooster for a while?

Welcome aboard! :frow

What is the size of the coop?
