I live in upstate NY and have had over the years just about every breed of chicken at one time or another. My husband and I have 2 propertys so keep breeding chikens at one farm and potential show birds at the other .We started with leghorns and booted bantams , then rhode island reds, then dominiques, a few assorted rare breeds just looking for a home from other farms that had a few too many. we always managed to keep it to a flock of 20 or so at each property. Over the years we settled on Australorps (Husbands favorite) and A few Sebrights (My fav)

a couple years ago I let the breeding flock out at farm 1 to scout around for greens and juicy bugs. That was a normal day.I thought I have pleanty of time to run over town and pick up a couple things by then it will be starting to get dark and they will get back into the cleaned pen. Went to grocery store and even picked up a bag of apples to cut up a few at a time to give to the chickens. When I returned , I just couldnt beleive what I found, There were dead chickens strewn everywhere it was pretty horrific. I wont get into details , it was bad. In the middle was an excited little red dog, a mixed breed very excited about his deed. This dog had killed every single chicken xcept one little white silkie amurcana X that we had as a handy brooder and lap chicken who loved people more than other chickens, she was hiding under some lumber that my husband proped against the wall for a future project. She was the sole survivor .

I went in called animal control , they came over right away but couldnt catch this dog, he took off, but they got to see him.

Just one week later My neighbor who lives a mile and 1/2 up the road let her prize winning silkies out and also had some lady amherst phesants (that are georgeous but look like something out of a science fiction movie) out into a large pheasant pen, silkies out in the yard, she had 36 birds in total.
Well this same little dog according to her came right out of nowhere and started grabbing and shaking her chickens and killing them one after another she ran in called authorities and this time they caught this dog, but not befor he killed the entire flock of 36.

We were both just devestated I vowed to rebuild flock but it sure hasnt been easy, try looking for top australorps? Not easy, even at shows the great ones are hard to find. same with sebrights.

As for my neightbor, she is still locked up in court with the dogs owner. She won a large sum of money , but he refuses to pay.

We have started rebuilding flock, this new chcicken house at farm 2 for show prospects and I just love it. Cluckingham palace is what my sister calls it. I was tentative for a while about letting birds out but slowly got over it . We do used chicken tractors at the other farm now. There is just nothing like seeing a flock out in the yard enjoying themselves.

That's awful what happened to you, but I'm glad you didn't give up on chickens! My neighbor won in court when our other neighbor's dog killed his entire flock, too. He had some sort of spring on his door that snapped shut when you walk in. The dog broke the door in and was then stuck inside. I think if he didn't have a dog himself, he would have shot the trapped dog...

Do you still have the silkie? Your set up is very similar to mine. I really like your coop!

Stupid owner!!!! I would've thrown that idiot in jail until he realized that the only way to get out of jail is to pay the money to the dead silkie's owner. I hope that dog is in a home that takes good care of him without a chicken for miles around or at least was put down humanely.

It is good though that you are getting back into them again. I wish you tons of luck

especially finding the ones you are really looking for. Now, for the little dog going around killing peoples birds. I sure as heck hope that the owners keep that animal under control. Let's just hope for the best for you.

Thanks everybody, We havnt seen that little dog since word is he now has a dog coop and fence. It was quite an ordeal. We did almost give up. I didnt sue the owner, but did witness in court for the neighbor with photos of some of our chickens at shows. And he got a lecture more or less about how hard it was going to be to replace these birds we spent years breeding and selecting for good eggs and show.

Im so glad to back into it again, I really missed the birds. and the nice poultry people like all of you .Little by little we will get back into it. Their first show is agust 4rth. choosing what might be a good bird and a backup. So we are excited about that.

The only downside is the birds will only be 4 mos. Usually we show between 5 and 7 mos..pullets and cockerals . could have waited for sept show but it was a long distance show and we thought the closer show would be better, less stress. they are so young because we delayed the hatch due to extream weather here in NY.

Not sure how they will do, but I will take pics to post aug 4rth after judging.

Im having a blast looking around at all of the great birds in here:lol:

I'm so glad to hear that you're rebuilding your flock and allowing them in the yard again! I have to agree with you, there is nothing like seeing a flock enjoy themselves as they scurry about chasing bugs and eating every green thing! Good luck and glad to have you on this forum!!

Oh, what a nightmare!

It is up to the dog owner to control their pets and take responsibility for any damage they cause to other neighbors. I'm not saying you are to blame in any way but I hope you have some perimeter fencing to help keep neighborhood dogs out. Although I know my dog can jump a 6' fence when she really wants to. Invisible fencing is a great training tool.
