I mean we haven't had more than a dusting of snow and temps have been in the 40s to 60s until this week. And it's almost a week into January.... So it's been great so far lol. But means we will have snow and ice into April.Welcome!!! Hope the Midwestern weather is treating you well!

That's lucky! Currently snowing sideways here with a windchill of 0 degrees... hoping that it will improve after this cold front but I know that won't happen. But same, it didn't start getting cold and snowy until after ChristmasI mean we haven't had more than a dusting of snow and temps have been in the 40s to 60s until this week. You have that Chicago weather. Thats always worse than what we get here. It ls supposed to be 38 degrees today. We haven't had any measurable snow to this point. Was supposed to get 1 to 3 over last weekend and got nothing. It's bitter sweet as Ive got my tractor ready for snow removal and have a new implement to help with snow removal but also it would be nice to not have snow and cold weather at all lolThat's lucky! Thanks. I think when I do this barn coop that I'm doing this winter spring that I will attempt to make it work again but with different nipples.Hello! Welcome to BYC!!Sorry to hear the waterer didn't work out as planned.
Stinkers I only use the cup waterers outside. I know the verticle nipples leak something fierce.I bought some of the nipples that have cups and a spring nipple so they hit the little yellow thing and water comes out into the cup for them to drink from. I took a 5 gallon bucket and mounted it up high and plumbed PVC pipe down along the side and mounted these cups and nipples every foot or so. Even put a shut off and union before running it into my isolation cage. The cups just clip on and that's what holds the tension and seal. They don't work at all. I'd go in and find half the cups bone dry and one or two filled to the brim and leaking onto the floor. And 5 gallons of water just about gone. I tried cracking the ball valve just slightly to reduce the gravity pressure of the water but it didn't matter. The nipples leaked.
I tried others mounting them directly into a 5 gallon bucket and they too leaked. Not as bad but definitely enough to be annoying.
I've got a new 5 gallon waterer that fills from the top and is kind of egg shaped. It has a tray at the bottom the fills up with water with a float to stop it from over filling. Its the best waterer i own. And it appears the chickens hate it. Go figure. They have only drank around 1 gallon out of it in the two weeks I've had it.![]()
I put the cup waterers inside because I didn't really know any better at the time. These things are super cheap feeling. It seems like if they were made of metal they would be better and not leak as easily.Stinkers I only use the cup waterers outside. I know the verticle nipples leak something fierce.
I guess they will drink when they get thirsty. Is the waterer the heated kind?
