Hello -
This site has been SO helpful to us - we've used it for building our coops, feed, treats, - everything. I have 2 NH Reds (about 1 year old), 2 White Crested Black Polish Hens, a White Crested Blue Hen, and a Black Copper Maran (these 4 are about 4 months old). We introduced the babies very slowly to the Reds so now they all get along fine; however, the Reds have no problem eating out of my hand, being held, and actually follow me every where. The other 4 want nothing to do with us other than when we have meal worms - then they stand about 5 feet away and wait for us to throw them. Any suggestions on how to get them to not be so standoffish? We got the babies when they were only 4 weeks old from a guy who never handled them. Is it possible that they may never be as friendly as the reds? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Glad you have joined us.

Sounds like you have to be patient, try tossing those mealie worms a little closer to you each day until they come within a few feet. Sit and get down to their level and hold some in your hand. If they don't come to you after a few minutes then toss a few close around you. Give it time and one brave one will come to the hand and then the all will.

Good luck with the newbies.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. The way to a chicken's heart is through its stomach. There is a good article on taming your chickens at http://www.mypetchicken.com/backyar...-run-away-whenever-they-see-me-Can-I-H57.aspx. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

It take more patience with some birds than others. And if yours weren't handled when they were chicks, it may take them a bit longer to warm up to you. Spend as much time with them as you can, talk to them so they get used to your voice, don't try to grab them. Treats will go a long way and sunflour is right, all it will take is 1 bird to be brave and the rest will follow.

It's nice to have you here!
