My wife and I retired a little over a year ago and bought 30 acres of (mostly) wooded property in Kaufman County, Texas. Among the buildings already on the property were a couple of "run down" chicken houses and an unserviceable fence.

So far we know absolutely nothing about raising chickens. We have been purchasing our eggs (free range) from a local farm and paying about $4 per dozen for what I would class as medium size eggs.

Since we "more or less" already have some of what we would need to start raising chickens and producing our own eggs, I decided to spend some time researching what to do and when to do it so I don't become simply a chicken "death-trap."

That's my reason for being here and hope I can read enough to be able to ask some "intelligent questions" in the coming months.

! Pleased you joined us! Chicken keeping is really quite easy...proper food, water, and predator proof shelter and you've won more than half the battle! You've come to the right place for chicken research. Start with the Learning Center - it will give you all the general information you need. Good luck and have fun - and enjoy those eggs!

go to "Where am I, where are you," so you can locate and post on your state thread. Texas has loads of chicken people - maybe some near you. They could provide specific info on coops etc. for your climate - where to find chicks, who has the best prices for feed, etc.

Thanks to you all for the "welcomes." In the coming days I'll figure out how to post some pics of what we found here. We'll need to add lots of elbow grease for sure. It looks like what the previous owner had done was to let his chickens free range in his garden, supplying grasshoppers for the chickens and good fertilizer for his plants. Or maybe it was all a 4H project. I can't say with certainty as I did not know him personally.

Hopefully we'll have it all cleaned up in time for spring.

Why don't you post some pics of what you have there here:

We have so many members here I'm sure you'd get loads of suggestions and ideas on how to go about fixing up those coops. Enjoy the site!

I have followed Sumi's advice (see above) and posted a few photos of "what we found" when we moved in. So far all I can say with any degree of certainty is that the building on the right in the picture appears to have been used for chickens and the one on the left appears to have been used for rabbits or other small caged critters. As far as I can tell both houses are snake and spider (brown recluse anyway) free. So the cleanup project will be first. Any suggestions? I do not know how to link to the photos, but they are in an album titled Ballonjuice's Chicken Project.
